ACNE is the four letter word that makes most people cringe. I am sadly one of those unlucky people that have adult acne; mine is caused by overactive hormones and I really hate it. I am working hard to battle it and with the help of my Esthetician, Doctor and Dermalogica, I hope to win that battle soon.
HOW IS ACNE CAUSED?
“Blemishes start when sebaceous glands, which are attached to the skin’s hair follicle canal, produce too much oil. When there is excess oil production – combined with ‘sticky’ dead skin cells lining the hair follicle canal that fail to flake – the pore becomes clogged. These conditions multiply, causing inflammation,” explains David Orentreich, Clinique’s Guiding Dermatologist.
Good daily skin care is so important for acne prone skin and will help remove excess oil, keep pores clear, and speed the healing of breakouts.
WOULD A FACIAL HELP?
People with blackheads and other non-inflammatory blemishes may indeed find regular facials help to reduce the amount of breakouts they experience. During a facial treatment, estheticians perform extractions by manually removing pore blockages, or comedones. By extracting these impactions, the pores are cleared of excess oil and cellular debris. Blemishes are less likely to form, improving some cases of non-inflammatory acne.
David Orentreich strongly recommends that you do not take matters into your own hands – that means NO squeezing or PICKING (though so tempting). He says that squeezing traumatizes and often breaks the stretched pore under the surface. The pore contains oils and bacteria and when squeezed will set off a spot.

We are in the heart of summer and I am constantly on the go, from morning to night. Meetings, product launches and seeing friends are on my daily agenda. I need my bag to hold the items that will keep me feeling and looking fresh all day long. Here are the 15 items that I currently cannot live without. What are your summer bag basics?
I burn so fast that I need to have it on hand all the time. I use Kinesys SPF 30. It smells great, dries super fast and is non greasy.
What would I do without money…not a lot! Mine was from Winners – they have a great selection and at good prices.
Note pad and pen
I keep it with me and write down the names of great restaurants, shops and any other pertinent info that comes my way. Notepad was $3 and pen was sent to me with my bombshell bargains order.
Keeping those harmful rays out of your eyes is important. I am not sure where I purchased mine from as they are quite old.
Clean and Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets are so fabulous. They soak up excess oil and cut the shine but they do not add any additional makeup or powder to your face.
My favourite will always be my Chanel Allure Sensuelle. When it is a little sticky out or I am going from day to evening – a little squirt makes me feel and smell great.
My current choice is Yonder and Green Moisturising Lip Balm as it keeps my lips feeling soft and supple. I like this product as they use high quality natural ingredients and I kind of liked the idea of it being vegan friendly too.
When I am going from day to evening and don’t have the chance to go home I dab a little Tarte Tickled onto the apples of my cheeks to add just a touch of colour to my face. This product is really easy to just pop into your bag and apply when needed.
I love those little Listerine Pocket Paks. So tiny yet so tough. No one likes coffee breath!
I am prone to migraines and headaches so I keep a little container of Tylenol Extra Strength with me at all times. There is nothing worse than being in a meeting and having a headache start.
Hand and Body Lotion
I have several travel size bottles of lotion that can be thrown into my purse at the last minute. My current favourite is J.R. Watkins Apothecary Aloe and Green Tea. It is very refreshing – perfect for hot summer days and evenings.
Summer is all about gloss! I have two in my bag at the moment: Rimmel Light Beam in 100 in the Mix and MAC Lipglass in Young Spark. The Rimmel gloss is so funny – it has a little mirror on the side and it has a light inside so you can apply at night! What will they think of next?
I would not usually say that eyeshadow should be an item in my bag…but this dual-ended eyeshadow wand from DaLish is fantastic. Swipe a little on your lid and gently smooth and you are done. Smart!
When the weather outside gets a little humid – as it is not, my hair gets a mind of its own. I like to be able to smooth it down and stop those stray flyaway hairs from sticking straight up! Recently I was introduced to Herbal Essences Shimmery Nights and it is great for those naughty stray hairs and it also adds a little shimmer to my coif too!
You never know who you are going to meet – whether it is a potential client, employer or cute guy
