Does October have you thinking about Thanksgiving and Halloween? What’s top of mind for us this month are all things pink. October as you probably know, is breast cancer awareness month. Pick up a pink breast cancer awareness product or two this month, and take part in an event, such as running in fundraiser – volunteer or do a charity run (check here for a few words of advice if you’re new to running), attending Boobyball if you’re in Toronto or Calgary, or pledging a friend who is fundraising (perhaps they just ran CIBC Run for the Cure this past weekend – it’s not too late to pledge them!) to help fund essential research. Sure, you can torch hundreds of calories in a super sweaty Spin class, but you can also benefit from burning calories in small amounts but in ways you can easily — and perhaps even more happily — than you would in a hardcore exercise class. Do you find you tend to put on weight in the fall season? There’s no good reason you should go into hibernation mode like a bear, but we can see how the rich and delicious autumn fare is tempting, and the fact that we no longer need to bare all in a bikini but rather can just get all cozy in layers of sweaters can certainly make hitting the gym to stay tone somewhat less urgent. Not to mention the fact that with school starting up and new routines in full swing, well, our health regimens often fall apart at the seams a bit in the fall. Inspired by all the runners you see in your neighbourhood and thinking of taking up the sport this fall? Before you jump right into it, I’ve drafted up some practical advice for you. Now, take note: I’m not a personal trainer or running coach by trade; this is just knowledge I’ve gathered in my five years of running, in interviewing running experts and reading about the sport. Keep in mind, though, that I started in a Learn to Run clinic — so I was an absolute beginner like many of you! And I’ve since run a few short races, nine half-marathons, one 30-kilometre race and one marathon, so I know firsthand of what I speak of here. Keep these tips in mind as you tie up those laces.
