Spring has arrived, which means it’s that time of year again…yes Mad Men time! With season five premiering on March 25, we’re all dying to find out what will happen of Joan and her supposed pregnancy. Plus, are Betty and Don really a done deal?
But most of all, we miss the iconic sixties beauty looks of Joan Halloway and Betty Draper. Don’t you wish you could rock a red lip and winged liner Mad Men style? Don’t worry; we’ve got pro tips from makeup artists Diana Carreiro, Vanessa Jarman and Carmelle Da Roza so you can go retro any time you desire.
Red Velvet Lips
Tread on the bolder side of 60’s beauty, with a Joan Halloway inspired matte red lip. For a more organic modern take on the red lip, skip the liner,” says Carreiro. Or pay pure homage to the era by outlining with liner before lipstick, “give special attention to the bow of your lips for a perfect pout. Add a dusting of translucent powder for a longwearing and matte application.” says Da Rosa.

Muted lips in shades of coral and pink as worn by Betty Draper are suitable if you’re less daring. Jarman advises that you set your lipstick colour by blotting lips on a tissue after your first coat. Then add a second coat for long lasting wear. Finish off with a lip balm for a slight sheen, or make it more modern like Da Rosa loves with a dot of gloss.

Flirty Cat’s Eye
The iconic Mad Men beauty trend for the eye is winged liner paired with lush lashes. Jarman always starts off winged liner with the outer ticks: “Begin the ticks at the end of your lash line and pull your liner upward. When the outer ticks are lined up, symmetry for the rest is a breeze!” Then move on to the lashes. “Mimic falsies that women often wore daily. First curl your lashes and then apply multiple coats of mascara,” says Da Rosa. Leave time for drying between coats to avoid clumping. For Carreiro a flirty lash enhances the winged liner: so on your third coat, only apply mascara to the outer corners of the lashes.

A smooth matte finish face is essential to sixties beauty. When applying pressed powder, “it’s all in your tools,” says Jarman. “Use a brush that is firm, but also soft and fluffy. When powdering around the nose and mouth use a small eye crease brush, while for your cheeks and forehead a medium blush brush is suitable.”

Perfectly painted red nails complete the overall Mad Men look. “Sixties nails were a feminine round shape, but stick to a length that best suits your lifestyle,” advises Jarman. Finish off with “a coat of clear polish for extra sheen,” says Da Rosa.
