Mary Katrantzou’s Collection for Topshop

By Doris Montanera

There’s nothing shy about Mary Katrantzou’s capsule collection launching at Topshop this spring. The Athens-born, U.K.-based designer is daring in her visual explosion of colour and fantasy.

Digital trompe l’oeil prints inspired by the detailing on Qing Long Dynasty floral motif china, lacquered Coromandel screens and crystal flower brooches, are collaged onto 10 womenswear pieces that include her signature porcelain bowl-look party dresses, tailored silk trousers, leggings, a tunic dress and sweater.

Katrantzou says her Topshop range reflects the aesthetic of her main collection as closely as possible. Jewel-encrusted flower brooches are scattered across a sleeveless, button-back georgette blouse. A gold bird perched on a hydrangea nest adorns a silk tunic dress. Reminiscent of a vase, a bouquet of flowers tops the Ming vase-like skirt on the satin Pheasant Dream dress. Prices range from $120 to $630.

Topshop, the U.K. retail chain, spotted Katrantzou while she was still a student at prestigious fashion school Central St. Martins and sponsored her recent fall 2012 London show. Only a handful of seasons out, Katrantzou has already won a Swiss Textile Award and a British Fashion Award for Emerging Talent in the ready-to-wear women’s category.

You’ll find carnations marching along midnight blue jersey leggings and twining around cotton tees. But shrinking violets? Forget it. This collection is all confidence and nerve.

It’s available exclusively in Canada at Topshop, The Bay, Yorkdale Shopping Centre, starting March 6.
