Shed the big city and inhale the crisp fresh air of northern Idaho’s lake-side city. This popular panhandle town has plenty of outdoor activities as well as several cultural options that make Sandpoint a perfect spot to recharge and renew.
Where to Stay
Six historic wood dwellings can be found at Sleep’s Cabins, located on the south shore of Lake Pend Oreille, across from the downtown. Each cabin is filled with historic and folksy art and objects, as well as comfortable furnishings, and access to a dock to relax in the sun or go for a swim. Modern cottages at Dover Bay Bungalows are close to walking trails and a dock for those travelling by boat, as well as offer accommodation for the two of you or enough space for a family reunion.
What to Do
Hiking and mountain biking trails are plentiful along the shores of Lake Pend Oreille, or for a lazy afternoon, Lake Pend Oreille Cruises offers a laid-back tour of the lake, wildlife and a local history lesson. Girls who need retail therapy can browse the racks for clothes and accessories at Zany Zebra, Bella Jezza or the Cedar Street Bridge Public Marketplace or for a dose of culture get a seat in the historic Panida Theatre or check out the photography at Hallans Gallery. Don’t miss a visit to the city beach, especially to see the local Statue of Liberty.
Where to Eat
Start the day by fueling up with a good cup of artisanal java at Evans Brothers or have a hearty breakfast at Di Luna’s Café. When lunch cravings hit, indulge in fine burgers and local brew at Mick Duff’s Brewing House or spend happy hour at the Pend Oreille Winery, featuring fine local vintages and well-paired appetizers. For romantic dining or treating your bestie , consider Forty One South or Trinity at City Beach, both offering tasty dinners with locally-inspired menus.
