Plum is the New Red

NARS Pure Matte Lipstick ($30/US $25) was a staple at the 2010 Fall New York Fashion Week and has been praised by celebrities from Cynthia Nixon to Dita Von Teese. But when we were presented with a tube of Volga – a very dark and rich plum shade – we admit we were slightly hesitant. Could somebody not from a film noir really pull off such a dark colour?

The answer is yes, absolutely! The lipstick is velvety smooth and keeps lips feeling hydrated – not at all sticky or dry. And the colour! Oh, the colour. It glides on in a rich purple hue that we think could flatter every skin tone; this shade would perfectly compliment a darker skin tone and really pop on a lighter skin tone. We suggest keeping the rest of your makeup more neutral to let this beautiful colour be a statement.

But we don’t want you just to take our word for it! Pick up your own tube of Volga today and allow yourself to be pleasantly surprised at how stunning you look with it on. After all…we think plum is definitely the new red.

NARS Cosmetics
Available at the Bay in Canada and Saks in the US.

I tried a deep purple from Mary Kay and was initially worried I’d look like a vampire but once I tried it on it’s really not as harsh as I thought. Now I’m all over darker shades!

I am so excited to try this NARS lipstick! I actually just re-watched Sex and the City 2 and Samantha in the opening wedding scene is wearing this exact shade. I guess plum really is the new red :)
