Healthy Ways to Say I Love You

A heart-shaped candy box is sweet, but it doesn’t say a whole lot. The best ways to show you care are simple gestures that will keep your lover happy and healthy for a long time (and not just one day out of the year).

Make a meal
One of the most traditional ways to communicate love is to feed the object of our affection. The process of gathering ingredients, preparing, cooking and presenting platefuls of delicious food requires time, patience and devotion. Plus, a homemade meal is always more nutritious than anything you’ll find on a fancy prix-fixe menu. Some dishes that are true labours of love include creamy saffron risotto, a slow-roasted chicken and decadent dark chocolate soufflé.

Use your hands
It’s far easier to proffer a gift certificate, but offering personalized massage takes touch to another level. Dim the lights, use a silky, sweet-smelling oil and take a full-body approach: use your elbows and knuckles to kneed out knots in the back, spend some time combing your fingers the scalp and don’t forget the hands and feet. A session like this is good for the body – it eases tension and stress, encourages blood flow and stimulates the release of feel-good endorphins – and the soul –– touch makes us feel safe, secure and intensely nurtured.

Work up a (less obvious) sweat
Of course, the hottest workouts don’t necessarily involve leaving the bedroom, but if you can peel yourself off the sheets, try a hot yoga or Pilates class together. Sharing a new, physical experience like this will intensify your bond, create excitement and give you some new, er, postures to practice at home.
