2008 Holiday Guide: Chic Chignon

Chic ChignonUnlike a standard bun, an off center knot - a.k.a. chignon - is loose and beautiful. It is just the thing for a casual holiday open house. You’ll love the ease of being able to create this simple coif yourself. It’s one less thing you’ll need to worry about this holiday season.

To get started, wash and condition hair as usual. Create volume and texture with a volumizing mousse and blow dryer. Don’t worry about getting it perfectly straight; a slight wave will cause loose tendrils to fall down, creating the perfect casual up-do.

Part hair from ear to ear, to create front and back sections. Pull the back section into a low, off center ponytail. Tease it slightly, or for those with wavy hair, curl wisps of hair around your finger for loose waves, and pin it into a sizable, loose bun. Allow loose ends to stick out, they add softness.

Tease the front section to add a touch of volume at the crown, and part hair to the side while keeping a soft side swept look. Wrap the hair loosely around the existing bun and use bobby pins to secure. Sweep bangs, if you have them, over the side and finish with a light spray of finishing mist.

Pair this classic style with a string of pearls and a bright red lip for a dose of both naughty and nice.
