Today I thought that I’d get a little more serious and look at skin
changes we have over the decades (as sad as it might be). It is important for us to look after our skin and if we start early enough we can slow down the signs of aging. I personally wish that I’d looked after my skin better when I was in my 20s. Had I known what I know now, I may have been able to prevent the crinkles I have today!
Your 20s
The hormonal teen years are behind you, and oil glands, which provide skin and moisture and plumpness, are at their peak production. The skin cells contain strong collagen and elastin bonds, giving both firmness and resilience.
Tips
- Start good habits early by hydrating your skin daily with a moisturizer containing SPF of at least 15
- Washing your face with hot water will strip it of natural oils. Be sure to use a mild gentle cleanser and follow up with a light moisturizer.
- It’s never too early to start using a night cream. Apply before going to bed and wake up to a beautifully moisturized complexion.
Your 30s
In our 30s, oil production decreases and fine lines and crows feet may appear (oh yeah!) Collagen and elastin start to break down and broken veins may show up as tiny red dots.
Tips
- Your skin may begin to feel drier so ensure you use a gentle cleanser and follow with a nutrient rich moisturizer.
- Apply a nutrient rich moisturizer before bed and try and get at eight hours of sleep a night.
- Apply an eye cream to around your eye. This will help in reducing the appearance of puffiness and dark circles.
Your 40s
Changes in your skin may be more noticeable now. It will become visibly drier and begin to lose some of its tone and elasticity. Skin becomes more sensitive. In our 40s skin has a harder time retaining moisture and its tone may appear less even.
Tips
- Even if you have had oily skin in the past it is time to add an oil free moisturizer to your daily routine.
- Avoid the sun as much as possible and ensure that you have sunscreen in your moisturizer.
- Exfoliate every week to increase the turnover of surface skin cells.
Your 50s
In your 50s skin starts to show character. As you enter menopause, your skin may feel thinner and more fragile. You may notice more wrinkles and a paler overall skin tone.
Tips
- Hydration is so important. Use a rich, protective moisturizer. Apply a nutrient rich night cream before bed.
- Use a creamy cleanser to assist in hydration of the skin.
- Exfoliate to clear dead skin cells but avoid harsh abrasives.
Well I hope that this information has been helpful. If you are not sure what products to use, go to a recommended Spa and ask an esthetician to take a look at your skin and give you their expert opinion.

Delightful Rose Balance Moisturizing Lotion is from the Bésame line of face products. Packaged in a vintage style, easy dispensing tube, this cream is a blast from the past. Can’t you just picture a dame from the war era sitting at her deco dressing table smoothing this on her face and neck before bed? I can.
Delightful Rose contains as you might guess…rose extract, which is known for its skin soothing and aroma therapeutic benefits as well as aiding in exfoliation. This ingredient combined with natural botanical oils assist in promoting and maintaining soft, smooth, and youthful looking skin.
I am truly impressed by the bevy of oils, extracts and vitamins in this lotion. In addition, Delightful Rose is free of color additives, mineral oils and lanolin.

I don’t know about you, but the weather in British Columbia turned ugly recently. The temperature went down significantly and the wind and rain is taking a toll on my skin.
I have found that my skin which tends to be on the oily side is now feeling tight and is flaking a bit from a lack of moisture. It’s time to battle the cold and save your skin! Here are some tips to maintain healthy skin this winter…
Drink up!
You know that you are supposed to drink approx 8 glasses of water a day. In the summer it’s quite easy to stick to this but in the winter it tends to be forgotten or felt not as necessary. Skin tends to get dehydrated in the winter due to lack of water. Water will help you maintain a healthy, glowing skin.
Winter Facial
Start the new season with a facial. Starting with healthier, cleaner skin allows your winter skin-care routine to be more effective. See your aesthetician to disucss the best facial for you.
Moisturize
Its time for your to change your moisturizer. What you wear in the summer most likely will not be suitable for the winter. Go for a cream versus a lotion - cream does not need to mean greasy.
Exfoliate
Dull, lacklustre skin is an unfortunate winter trademark. Caused by a buildup of dead skin regular exfoliation will give those dry, flaky cheeks a boost. Two to three times a week is a great way to ensure you’re always showcasing your freshest, healthiest skin.
Sunscreen
The sun’s rays are always there, don’t be fooled by the lack of sunshine and heat. Ensure that you apply your sunscreen everyday 30 mins before leaving home, to protect your skin.
Lips
Don’t forget those lips. They need care and attention to stay smooth and soft when it’s chilly outside. Keep your favourite lip balm close to you and apply often.
Take care this winter and look after yourself. Don’t let Jack Frost cramp your style!
